Workplace Mentoring
"This program is more than just the responsibility to improve a child's education. It's about being a positive role model for a child in all aspects of life - family, friends, academics, health. Knowing that they may apply these positive influences in their own lives is the most rewarding feeling of all." - Kimberly Connors, Volunteer, Smith Barney
Reaching out to students during the school day to provide additional reading support is very important. However, our Workplace Mentoring program goes a step further. Students - who have graduated from the Power Lunch program and are ready for a new challenge - jump on a bus and head to a corporate office for one-on-one tutoring in a workplace environment.
Catering to our older and more mature students, WITS recruits fourth, fifth and sixth graders to participate in this unique program. For many students, workplace mentoring provides an opportunity to explore beyond the walls of their neighborhoods opening their eyes to the exciting world of local businesses.
After school, students jump on a bus and travel to their corporate or community partners' office. They are then paired with the same employee for an entire school year. The program usually takes place in a conference room where the students and mentors work for an hour-an-a-half on reading comprehension exercises and homework.
Commitment: an hour and a half, once a week (or every other week if alternating with a coworker)
