Saturday Tutoring
The Saturday program was started in 2002 by the WITS Associates Board, comprised of Chicago's young professionals. Saturday Tutoring is a bi-monthly program structured around one-on-one tutoring for elementary-aged students with the intention of giving children safe, academically supportive weekend activites. This program allows those with busy work schedules during the week to still volunteer two hours of their time, twice each month, with the same student, forming a mentoring bond and helping their student to develop basic literacy skills.
Volunteers spend these structured two hours, twice each month, with the same student. In this consistent, supportive relationship, volunteers serve as positive adult role models, while helping their student foster a love of literacy and learning. At Saturday Tutoring, WITS provides a variety of engaging materials for volunteers and students to choose from. Student-volunteer pairs enjoy reading one-on-one, engaging in conversation together, and fun activities, such as field trips to the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Field Museum.
The students range in age from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Volunteers are trained in content and are provided ongoing support by WITS staff to ensure a rewarding experience for both adult and child.
