Raising Readers

4 Helpful Tips from Chicago Public Library

  1. Get a library card and use it.  A Chicago Public Library card is free.
  2. Read aloud with a child for twenty minutes a day.  If you read aloud to a child for twenty minutes a day, starting from birth, that child will start school ready to read.
  3. Have books in your home.  If a child sees books at home, the value of books and reading is reinforced. How to do this for no cost? See point #1.
  4. Get caught in the act of reading.  Children watch and model what the adults in their life do.  If they see you reading, they are more likely to become lifelong readers.

The goal is for each CPS student to read at least 25 books each year.
