Early Childhood

WITSThe Early Childhood Volunteer Program is our newest literacy program, in which individuals and corporate groups volunteer in elementary classrooms with Pre-K and kindergarten students. During their visit, volunteers read aloud with students in a one-on-one setting. Whether nestled on a couch or sharing a desk, the volunteers and students enjoy picture books together while introducing the child to the joys of reading.

The simple act of allowing children to pick out their own books and even turn their own pages gives them such a sense of accomplishment. While young children may not be able to read the words on the page, they can finish their volunteers' sentences and take a guess as to what they think will happen next. While it may seem effortless for the volunteer, it is truly a complex and life-changing experience that takes place within the walls of these reading rooms.

"Reading has always been important to me, both for pleasure and as a key to learning. Volunteering with the Early Childhood program allows me to share my enthusiasm with special youngsters in a simple and nurturing environment. The best rewards are those moments when I just know that the child is caught up in a story, getting the same enjoyment from reading that I do." - Jean Lubliner, Volunteer, Peabody School
