America's "education crisis" has a face: it is Marisol, who has never had a book of her own and as a 5th grader reads at a first grade level. It is Kenneth, who at eight years old has already been in four schools, three of which were closed by CPS due to school failure. It is Renee who spends her free time taking care of her six siblings with no time for homework, no money for a tutor, and a mother who herself cannot read. Hearing these stories and reading the haunting statistics, we recognize the time for change has come.
How can I help? This is the resounding question we at WITS continue to hear. How does an individual balance their desire to help with the demands of their own family, their own job, and their own challenges? Our answer: Get to know WITS, either for the first time, or even more in-depth.
LEARN HOW WITS ADDRESSES THE READING GAP by pairing students with caring and consistent adults for weekly, one-on-one reading sessions.
INVESTIGATE HOW WITS ENFORCES VIOLENCE PREVENTION through our Workplace Mentoring program by providing students with safe and educational after-school activities.
EXPLORE OUR EARLY LITERACY INTERVENTION which targets students during the critical developmental years of pre-K through 8th grade.
FIND OUT ABOUT OUR CAREER EXPOSURE provided through our corporate volunteer programs, in which students are introduced to a number of potential career paths and aspirations.
Simply asking "how can I help?" leads directly to making a tangible difference in the life of a child. As a community, we all care about every Marisol, Kenneth and Renee. We want every child to be a success story like Isidro Gonzalez, a WITS graduate whose moving letter is enclosed. From each of us here at WITS, and from the 2,500 children we serve, thank you for asking.
